Steven R. Gordon has been appointed as the permanent president of Good Samaritan Medical Center effective September 2.
Gordon will take the reins from John Holiver, who was promoted to the position of president at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton, a sister hospital in the Caritas Christi Healthcare System. Gordon brings more than 25 years of experience in health care and hospital management to Good Samaritan, serving most recently as the chief administrative officer of Children’s Hospital Boston at Waltham.
“The high quality patient care and wonderful reputation of Good Samaritan, its physicians, employees and staff were instant draws for me,” said Gordon. “I am inheriting an institution that makes a difference in the lives of so many in the community and I look forward to continuing its exceptional services for patients and leading Good Samaritan into the future.”
The incoming president has a track record of implementing clinical, operational, financial and marketing plans, which have contributed to superior customer service and clinical excellence. Prior to joining Children’s, he served for six years as the vice president of physician and business development at Newton-Wellesley Hospital where, as a member of the senior management team, he developed and implemented an extensive portfolio of new physician alliances, partnerships and collaborative programs across the Partners system. In addition, Gordon initiated, coordinated and managed all major construction projects there including new Women’s Imaging, Maternity, GI, Rehab Services and Physician Clinic areas, as well as a new Emergency Department.
“The Good Samaritan family has never been more deserving of the strong and focused leadership that Steve will bring as its new president,” said Holiver. “With a remarkable performance in a June Joint Commission Survey, continued expansion projects including the recently opened radiation oncology center and introduction of new services, Steve will shepherd Good Samaritan into a new era.”
Gordon began his hospital administration career with Hospital Corporation of America, the largest private hospital system in the country, and was CEO/President of Parkland Medical Center in Derry, N.H. for 13 years. During his leadership at Parkland, the hospital was consistently ranked as one of the top performers within the system in terms of clinical and financial strength, as well as employee, patient and physician satisfaction. His strong physician relations led to a greatly expanded medical staff which, coupled with the development of medical office buildings throughout the hospital service area, significantly enhanced Parkland’s position in a highly competitive market.
Growing up in Milton, Gordon graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Civil/Environmental Health Engineering. He then received his Master’s in Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota. A lifelong Rotarian, he has always been actively involved in the local communities, serving on the board for the Waltham YMCA, Waltham West Chamber of Commerce, and Partnership for Youth, and Waltham Family School. He is also active in the Waltham Boys and Girls Club.
“We are fortunate to have someone of Steve’s caliber who will take the helm of Good Samaritan,” said Arthur Wyman, chairman of the Good Samaritan Board of Trustees. “We look forward to welcoming him to our family and continuing our tradition of exceptional care for our patients and their families.”
