Wound Care Center Opens at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center

8/1/2008

Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center to Open Wound Care Center
Facility to include hyperbaric chamber to aid healing process

Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center tomorrow will open the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at 909 Sumner St. in Stoughton.

The new center will provide comprehensive wound management including state-of-the-art Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a treatment in which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. It quickly delivers high concentrations of oxygen into the blood stream and to the tissues, allowing the body’s natural wound-healing mechanisms to function more efficiently. It is also effective in fighting certain types of infection, as well as stimulating new blood vessels and improving circulation.

Indications for HBOT include: diabetic ulcers of the lower legs, progressive necrotizing (“flesh-eating”) infections, chronic infection of the bone, preservation of failing skin flaps and grafts, crush injuries/acute impairment of blood flow to the limbs, and late effects of radiation.

Christopher Corey, MD, will serve as the Center’s Medical Director.  Corey, the senior partner at Park Surgical Associates in Brockton, joined the Good Samaritan staff in 1982. Board-certified in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Corey brings his vast skills in traditional surgical and endovascular approaches to wound care to the Center. He is joined by his partners Richard Paulson, MD; Richard Grotz, MD; Peter Augustinos, MD; and Allen Davis, MD, who will serve as panel physicians in the Wound Center. The Park Surgical Group physicians, along with the staff at the Center, are specially trained in problem wound management and Hyperbaric Medicine and are dedicated to providing comprehensive treatment using advanced wound care modalities.

Patricia Webster, BSN, RN, WCC is the program director for the Caritas Good Samaritan Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. Webster, who began her nursing career at Cardinal Cushing General Hospital in 1985, returns to Caritas Good Samaritan bringing her many years of clinical as well as management experience and passion for wound care to the program. She received her RN from New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, her BS in Nursing from Kaplan University and wound care certification through the National Alliance of Wound Care.  She is also a member of the National Alliance of Wound Care.

The Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine is designed to complement the services offered by the patient’s physician and serves as an extension of the physician’s practice. As such, the Center maintains ongoing communication with the primary physician in the form of individual wound healing reports and case studies.

Referrals to the Center may be placed by physicians, patients, family members, or any member of the health care team. Services provided by the Center include: consultation, comprehensive medical assessment, development of a treatment plan, advanced wound care treatment, HBOT as indicated, and patient education.

The Good Samaritan Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine can be reached at 508-427-2480.
