Family and friends of the late Millie Moynihan, as well as hospital trustees, physicians and staff recently gathered in Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center’s J. Joseph Moakley Center to dedicate the Millie Moynihan Cancer Resource Center.

Millie died of cancer at the age of 60. She was the wife of John Moynihan Jr. of Easton, who retired from Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in 2004 after 34 years in the hospital’s finance department. Millie received care at the hospital during her illness, and her family, including her children John (Bridgewater), David (North Easton), Dennis (North Easton), Katie (Taunton) and Kim (North Easton), made a commitment to help improve cancer care services at the hospital in Millie’s memory. The family held a series of annual Millie Moynihan Memorial Golf Tournaments to raise money. Over five years the family raised $75,000 which was pledged to the hospital to establish the cancer resource center.

“We dedicate ourselves to working diligently to fulfill our shared commitment to fighting cancer – in Millie’s memory – as we continue to enhance oncology services for our community,” said hospital president John Holiver during the dedication.

Gerard Boyle, Millie’s brother described her as the glue which held the family together and reflected on the profound impact Millie had on those around her, including “fantastic family parties and extravagant decorating, especially at Christmas when every room in the house was transformed.” He added that Millie’s five children and 11 grandchildren will carry on her traditions.

The cancer resource center named to honor the memory of Millie Moynihan is a quiet place where patients, family and friends can research the disease, its diagnoses, the latest treatments, alternative therapies and support groups through books, pamphlets and high speed Internet access.
